Focus on Variety and Color

Eating your fruits and veggies is critical to your weight and health. Why do I push eating more of the good? Well, we know dieting or restrictive eating does not work, so instead we need to focus on eating more of the good. Makes sense right?! Not to mention, they are a nutrition powerhouse filled with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. So, eat up!

Below are 11 tips to help you increase your fruit and vegetable consumption no matter what time of year:

  1. Meal plan. Meal planning, no matter what your goal, is a key component to having fruits and vegetables in the home and eating an overall healthy plate.

  2. Pair them with other foods. Remember, including fruits and veggies does not have to mean you eat them alone. Include them with casseroles, soups, etc. Enjoy the flavor they add.

  3. When grocery shopping, hit the produce section first. Why? They are the most important for healthy eating, as well as leaving less room for other stuff.

  4. Eat what you love. We are lucky to have a variety of produce in the stores no matter what season. Focus on what you enjoy, even watermelon in the winter.

  5. Convenience does not always mean unhealthy foods. Who doesn’t like a veggie tray or cut up fruit or veggies when available. Why not?

  6. Focus on what is in season.

  7. Variety. Think color. Every different color of fruits and vegetables provides you different vitamins and minerals. Enjoy the variety no matter what time of year.

  8. Fresh, frozen and canned. If canned fruit, make sure it is in its own juice or unsweetened. Canned vegetables, go for low sodium. Frozen is convenient as well, but be mindful of added sugars (not naturally occurring) and sauces that add calories and fat.
